Pass it on This Trout Season

Hope all you Wildmen made it out to the water to kick off trout season. We recently caught up with seasoned trout angler Kasey, who’s been fishing since she was old enough to hold a rod. When I asked how she got started, she shared a family tradition that shaped her love for the sport:

“My dad and uncles had a yearly tradition where we’d all meet at a spot for the first day of trout season in PA when I was a kid. They would take turns helping us kids out and teaching us how to fish.”

Kasey’s Go-To Trout Setup

Kasey loves wading the rivers and streams of Northeast Pennsylvania with an ultralight spinning setup—her 5’6″ St. Croix Ultralight paired with a Shimano SEDONA reel. When fishing rivers and streams, she sticks to worms—mealworms, wax worms or red worms. But when she hits the lakes, she prefers lures over live bait.

Her favorites? Trout Magnet crankbaits and soft plastic craws on jig heads. The Trout Magnet’s long, slender profile, internal rattles, and unique stop-and-go action mimic natural prey, making it irresistible to trout. Meanwhile, soft plastic craws work because their lifelike movement, color, and scent imitate real crawfish and other forage.

Kasey’s Advice

If you’re just getting into trout fishing, Kasey keeps it simple:

Don’t overcomplicate things. Use 4lb test, a size 10 or 12 hook (barbless if you’re catch-and-release), a split shot or two, and your bait of choice. Always bring a net—it makes landing fish easier. If you’re releasing, wet your hands before handling the fish, and always carry forceps to remove the hook.”

Pass It On

Fishing is more than just a hobby—it’s a tradition. Take a loved one with you, introduce them to the sport, and share the adventure. You never know—they just might love it as much as you do.
